'well, it could', she said

Rosey's mouth is screwed.

Well, okay, not screwed, but bad enough to make me think the dentist is humoring me.

(And our dentist? A very sweet person*.)

R's front tooth - the one next to the gaping hole in her mouth - is slightly discolored. This happened since the accident, and I just figured it was the death knell for the tooth.

Our dentist said there's a possibility that the tooth might have blood inside it (like a bruise) and that would have caused the discoloration. It might get better.

We were all set to be on Fever Watch 2008, since the problem with whapped teeth is that they can abscess, and that can get hugely nasty. (Mental note: must warn pre-school.)

Then they took x-rays.

And we were screwed.

Rosey's tooth has a broken root. A broken root. Oh frabjous joy. Apparently Miss Rosey has inherited both the clumsiness gene (from me) and the sheer cussedness tendency to always have the worst-case scenario happen (from Bear.)

We were sunk in gloom when Bear piped up. Trying to put a good face on things, he said (Oh Pollyanna!) "But it might grow back, right? The nerve could regenerate."

She looked at both of us, then at Rosey, watching us all.

"Well, it could," she said.

*Whose office called me at eight am this morning (I left an unhappy message on the answering machine this weekend) and fitted us in today. Not complaining, so much.

Is this her permanent tooth? I was assuming until I read this that it was one of her baby teeth so eventually she would have one grow in...if it's a perm? Wow, that would suck.

Oh, I'm sorry!

No, it's a baby tooth. THANK GOD.

Hey, Jess - we had a chipped tooth here for 4 years. And a broken root. The permanent tooth came in FINE. Just as big as its neighbor.

Another friend's son lost not only 2 of his baby teeth at nearly 3, he has also knocked out two PERMANENT TEETH and they did some fancy dentistry and now he's got front teeth again. We are assuming he'll eventually be a hockey player with his toothy luck.

So is there a next step, such as surgery, or is it a wait-and-see situation?

You know, the tooth fairy tends to be r-e-a-l-l-y generous to little girls who have any sort of oral surgery. I'm just sayin'...

I went around for four years with a black front tooth when I was a kid. I'm so glad this is her baby tooth, not the permanent one.

Poor Rosey. I think she's working the gappy/discoloured tooth thing though, carrying it off with cheeky charm.

No, Jen, we didn't talk about surgery. We're supposed to wait and see about the tooth - she has an appointment for a cleaning next week, so I'm sure they'll take more x-rays then and compare the two.

I'm also afraid if she had to have surgery she'd end up with a pony.

Wow! When Rosey does something, she does it up right, doesn't she? I'm sorry though that this may keep you up at night.

That sounds familiar, Bradley's tooth is also discoloured, but the dentist ensures me that his permanent teeth will be fine.
Glad it's her baby tooth that's damaged, and not the adult one. I really hope that the adult ones will be ok.

Awwww, so sorry. I hope she isn't in pain.

My sister has a tooth ache and she can't get in to see her dentist until Thursday..ouch! She is not a happy camper.

Rosie's pony--if she only knew---YOU'd be screwed. My youngest broke a baby tooth and navigated the toddler years with a big gap. The permanent tooth came in, eventually, and it was perfectly normal....

Thankgoodness it is the baby tooth! I felt sick for you, when I read that news.
Our son lost his two beautiful front teeth at 16, when he smashed them in half, falling of his bike. They patched them up, but his natural ones were so beautiful & straight.

Thank goodness it's only a baby tooth. I read this post with horror and sympathy because I have The World's Worst Teeth and can totally imagine something like this happening to me. I have a very destructive relationship with my teeth - I beg them to stay strong but they fall apart all. the. time.

I lost a tooth, a few times, never got anything for it though.
I think if the tooth fairy took them she sold them on ebay and kept the money cause I never got anything for em.

UGG! All dental issues make me squirrely and sad for the patient. I'm sorry but somewhat relieved it's a baby tooth but still.... UGG!

Poor Rosie. My nephew had an incident with the two front baby teeth that required their removal when he was 4.

He started the first day of Kindergarten with any new kid asking him for directions. Tall kid missing teeth? He must be a second grader!

Poor little punkin! Hopefully no abscess for her.

Poor babe. I can't add anything here, but that's the worst of all luck. I'm sure her gappy smile will be charming!
