Little secret: I don't like Oprah.
I usually don't appreciate her show, generally don't agree with her taste in books and still am not sure that large bunches of people won't wake up after Super Tuesday and wonder if they voted for Obama because they wanted to, or if they got caught up in a Winfrey-frenzy.
That said, I don't think she's evil.
But I don't think she's a genius, either.
Lunch hour today I found an old Woman's World magazine. (You'd be amazed at how old the magazines can be in the X-ray department of a rural hospital) In it was an article about 'plugging into your inner genius' and featured an arresting first line about 'Do you want to be a mastermind like Einstein, da Vinci, or Oprah? Follow these simple strategies below!'
I goggled. I had to be reading that wrong, right?
I wasn't.
Oprah Winfrey has an interesting story. She's a self-created multi-media extravaganza, all wrapped up with a bow. She's done good things for the environment and gotten people to read, etc, etc, etc.
But genius?

Oprah's up there with Eistein and Da Vinci, eh? That's rich.
Also? I can't type.
Argh.
Never been a fan of hers and most definitely wouldn't put her in the same category as Einstein or Da Vinci. Heck, I don't even think she's smarter than a 5th grader!
(My doctor's office had year old US magazines recently. It was interesting to see how wrong they were!)
Yay! Glad your secret is out. SO with you. She is a smart woman, with smart marketing, but genius?? Never. She irritates the hell out of me with her bloody hands! And her hogging the camera, & her finishing others sentences.. & oh well, enough said.
Does anyone else out there get the irrits with dr phil??
I agree, genius is going a bit far.
Thank God it's not just me. I have never been a huge fan. Oddly enough, I like her ACTING. But not her show. Or her ON the show. Or ... anything else having to do with her, really.
I used to live in Chicago and out of town friends ALWAYS asked me "Oh, have you been to the Oprah show?" They seemed so disappointed when I told them that I never once considered it.
In fact, I've never even seen the Oprah show.
Which is remarkable since my son was ON the Oprah!
OK, I watch the 3 minutes he was on. On tape.
I was a fan back in the day. When she lost weight, she lost me. I wonder if being fat was what kept her humble and grounded and in touch with the real world. Cause really? Now she isn't. I read where Madonna is the wealthiest woman singer in the world. I guess that makes her a musical genius?
I tried to get into the Oprah thing and just couldn't. I definitely agree that she is good at marketing, but genius? Nah.
And I am with you, Meggie on the Dr.Phil thing. He annoys the heck out of me. And he is EVER-damn-WHERE! His agent needs to learn the power of saying "no".
That's Baby Einstein, right?
Don't you love it when celebrities try to make themselves appear to be intellectuals? I'd definitely class Oprah in that category.
