stuff I knew in grade school

(To distinguish between the spellings of principal and principle)
The principal is your pal.
The principle of saving money is simple.

(the names of the great lakes)
Huron
Ontario
Michigan
Erie
Superior
it spells homes, get it?

(how to spell arithmetic)
A Rat In The House Might Eat The Ice Cream

(how to tie shoes)
Here's the rabbit, now where does he run?
Around the tree, and into the hole
So quick!

Miss Suzy had a steamboat
The steamboat had a bell
Miss Suzy went to heaven
The steamboat went to

Hello Operator
Please give me Number 9
And if you disconnect me
I'll kick you right

Behind the refrigerator
There was a piece of glass
Miss Suzy fell upon it
And broke her little

Ask me no more questions
I'll tell you no more lies
Miss Suzy went to Heaven
And on that day she died!

I could also make nifty tissue paper carnations.
And ribbon barrettes.

That last little ditty brought back so many memories. I think all of my memories involve some kind of hand clapping with a partner however. I love reading you blog Jess. Have I ever told you that? If not, well then I love reading you blog.

I forgot that I used to sing "Miss Suzy" when I was a kid. Oh for those days again, carefree and innocent.
Thank you for reminding me of that. I never knew the one about the Great Lakes, that is cool. I may have to use that when my son needs to learn them.
That was a wonderful post. Keep up the good work.

I didn't know the arithmatic one, but I remember all the others. There's a mnemonic device for remembering the planets, too, and one for order of math operations. Something about My Dear Aunt Sally.

I remember doing the hand-clapping thing to Old Mary Mac, too. I loved those.

Great stuff, jess.

Oh my GOSH! I'm totally laughing at the Suzy song. I guess that was our way of saying bad words without getting in trouble when we were kids, eh? HA! Too funny! I'm going to try the rabbit trick on my six-year-old who is NOT motivated to learn to tie his shoes at all yet--my goodness!
