blackberry pie

I may have started something here.

Everyday since last week's berry picking, the kids have been scouring the side-yard for edible things. And they keep finding them.
Eat your hearts out, city-dwellers. Who knew such bounty existed right outside?

Today's haul was blackberries. With a few unexpected raspberries and a handful of blueberries. We're also seeing a lot of apples ripening and some chokecherries.

I pointed out the fluffy fronds of wild carrot and the thin, gorgeous red-stemmed vines that hold wild strawberries in the spring. We nipped a few purple clover heads and inspected the area where Cass has been planting his apple cores for the last month. (Nothing yet. We still have hope.) I'm thrilled that they are enjoying being connected to the earth this way - and woefully aware that I don't know enough to teach them much more. I think we'll all be visiting the library - soon.

Tonight's pie should be spectacular.

I'm 38 and I still get a buzz to eat from the trees. Don't think I'll ever grow out of it. It is totally freaken great for kids to get this. Hope the pie was great. We made raspberry fold-overs from the berries we picked earlier this week. Sweeter when you pick 'em. (Love your new header. So much fun!)

These are the things that fond childhood memories are made of. Keep nurturing those...

I walked past the nearest blackberry patch this weekend. Still no sign. Will be a month or so before we get any here. Please feel free to mail me a slice of pie to keep me going.

Oi! I live in the city and I can get all of that here, too. You just have to know where to look. So nyah.

Sadly, apple seeds planted from apples bought at the market generally don't do anything. You could maybe buy a little tiny sapling at the garden shop, though. Or ask them what kind of seed to plant so he can grow his own.

Nice, we went camping over our holidays and I spent a lot of our walks pulling at the wild raspberry bushes. The kids weren't too interested but I persisted. Hopefully they will get interested. But if they don't then it is just more for me!
